Chapter 14

Summary

The monster was always listening in on other’s conversations. This enables him to find out the history
and names of the cottagers who he thought were his friends. De Lacey, was a wealthy citizen of Paris. Safie and her father were Turkish. Safie’s father had been thrown in jail and sentenced to death even though he was being falsely accused by the French government. Felix was present at this trial and he felt that the sentence was unfair and wanted to help the man no matter what it takes. While going to visit the man in jail he met the man’s daughter and fell in love with her. Felix helped the man make a plan to escape from prison. Felix was promised his daughter’s hand in marriage after helping him escape. Safie sent Felix letters thanking him for trying to help her father. Since the man managed to escape from prison, the French government was angry. Also when they found out about the plan that Felix was apart of. This means Felix, his sister, and De Lacey cannot return home and were cut off from their wealth. They were able to find a small cottage in Germany, where they now live. The monster was able to find them there living in sadness and poverty. When Safie found out about where they were living, she went to go find them. Her father, the Turk, wanted her to return to Constantinople with him instead but she did not listen to him.

Setting
The setting of this story takes place in the family's cottage in Germany, but the story overheard and being told takes place in the old home of the family in Paris. The place they used to live in Paris was far different from their home now. They had money and were well liked by many. They had friends and the community was happy and like a big family to them. The monster hears about the capture in Paris and the jail where Safies father was held in, and the later journey they took on their way to Germany to find a new home.

Theme
I think that the theme of this chapter was learning about love, and family, and the risks you take for them. Felix and his family tried so hard to bring Safie and her father back together after he was wrongly accused for a crime. Even though Felix and his family suffered for it, they still love eachother and make do with what they have. Family and love is very important to this group of people, it gives them someone to count on and hope even in the hardest of times.
